Istanbul: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the establishment of a ceasefire in Gaza that Israel will fully adhere to, highlighting the necessity of securing guarantees to uphold such an agreement. Speaking to reporters after his visit to Azerbaijan, where he participated in the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization summit, Erdogan emphasized the importance of creating a robust foundation for negotiations to achieve a lasting peace in the region.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Erdogan pointed out that if a permanent ceasefire is achieved, it could pave the way for enduring peace. He underscored the importance of a strong and lasting ceasefire, reiterating that the two-state solution remains the only viable answer to the ongoing conflict. Erdogan criticized Israel’s history of violating ceasefire agreements, stating that these breaches have hindered long-term stability in the region.
Erdogan noted that the recent ceasefire between Iran and Israel could serve as a model for Gaza, adding that Hamas has shown a willingness to cooperate. He expressed disappointment over the lack of decisive action from the United States, urging it to leverage its influence to facilitate a ceasefire in Gaza. Erdogan emphasized the urgency, stating that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza required immediate attention.
He further elaborated on Turkey’s role in providing humanitarian aid and supporting mediation efforts led by Egypt and Qatar. Erdogan also addressed the Syrian conflict, categorically rejecting any attempts to legitimize terrorist entities within the country. He highlighted Turkey’s commitment to Syria’s unity and reconstruction, in light of the recent lifting of sanctions by the United States and Europe.
The Turkish president also touched on Turkey’s improving relations with Syria, emphasizing the importance of Syria’s territorial integrity for regional stability. Erdogan outlined potential economic collaborations, such as free trade zones and logistical bases in northern Syria, aimed at bolstering economic stability.
In his discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Erdogan mentioned that Azerbaijan is willing to support Syria’s energy needs, particularly concerning natural gas. He praised Aliyev’s initiative, acknowledging the critical energy challenges Syria faces.
Lastly, Erdogan expressed optimism about Turkey’s acquisition of F-35 fighter jets from the United States, highlighting the strategic importance of the deal for Turkey’s defense sector and international partnerships. He emphasized Turkey’s commitment to peace and security, both regionally and globally, and reiterated that Turkey poses no threat to any nation that does not threaten its interests.
