BEIRUT: As Lebanon faces increasing strain on its healthcare system due to a surge in casualties and injuries, the European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) has stepped in with crucial support. The EU has provided a shipment of 40 Trauma Emergency Surgical Kits (TESKs), sufficient for 4,000 trauma surgeries, to assist the country's emergency response. These kits have been swiftly transported to the Ministry of Public Health warehouses, with 13 TESKs already distributed to six major referral hospitals across Lebanon. The World Health Organization (WHO) is collaborating with the Ministry of Public Health's Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC) supplies focal point to ensure efficient distribution of the remaining kits. According to National News Agency-Lebanon, this essential delivery is aimed at easing the burden on hospitals that are currently operating at full capacity. The hospitals are dealing with a substantial influx of trauma cases daily. Dr. Firass Abiad, Lebanese Minister of Public Health, e mphasized the importance of these supplies, noting that they enhance the hospitals' readiness and response capabilities. He also highlighted the significance of this international support as a gesture of solidarity with Lebanon during challenging times. The 30-tonne shipment, coordinated with WHO, underscores a sustained commitment to addressing the immediate crisis while also bolstering Lebanon's healthcare system for potential future emergencies. Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar, acting WHO representative in Lebanon, remarked on the unprecedented challenges faced by the health system in recent weeks, with frontline and referral hospitals handling about 300 patients daily. This situation has overwhelmed healthcare staff and drained resources. The support from ECHO, which includes the procurement of these surgical kits, equips healthcare workers and hospitals with necessary tools to manage the increasing number of injured patients. The initiative is part of a broader project funded by ECHO, which aims to improve acce ss to critical healthcare for vulnerable populations. It focuses on enhancing hospitalization services for patients requiring lifesaving and limb-saving treatments and trauma care amid conflict. Additionally, the project strengthens healthcare system resilience, supports health sector coordination, and fosters partnerships with key stakeholders to ensure comprehensive and efficient fulfillment of humanitarian needs.
