Baghdad: The European Union pledged support to Iraq to ensure the success of the upcoming Baghdad Conference and confirmed its commitment to participate effectively in the event. This declaration came during a meeting between Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, and the Special Representative of the European Union for the Arab Gulf, Luigi Di Maio, who previously served as Italy’s Foreign Minister from 2019 to 2022.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting addressed the latest developments in Syria following recent political changes. Di Maio sought Iraq’s assessment of the current situation in Syria, its future prospects, and the role the European Union might play in supporting regional stability.

Hussein emphasized Iraq’s intention to use the Baghdad Conference as a platform to discuss regional issues and foster cooperation with the European Union. He highlighted Iraq’s initiatives in bringing together various parties to facilitate understandings between countries. Di Maio assured the European Union’s support for the conference’s success and confirmed its active participation.

Additionally, the discussion covered Iraqi-Kuwaiti relations and Iraq’s preparations for the upcoming Arab Summit in Baghdad. The dialogue also extended to the dynamics between European Union countries and the new US administration, as well as the ongoing situation between Ukraine and Russia from a European perspective.

The meeting concluded with Hussein inviting Di Maio to visit Iraq, a proposal that was positively received by the European representative.
