Doha: The Financial Times reported that France, Germany, and Britain have informed the United Nations of their readiness to reimpose sanctions on Iran if Tehran does not return to negotiations with the international community regarding its nuclear program.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the newspaper quoted a letter it had seen that the foreign ministers of the so-called “European Troika” wrote to the United Nations on Tuesday indicating the possibility of “snapping back sanctions” unless Iran takes action.

The Ministers stated in the letter, “We have made clear that if Iran is not prepared to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, the E3 are prepared to trigger the snapback mechanism.”

The E3’s warning comes after talks with Iran in Istanbul last month, the first face-to-face meeting since the Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

The Financial Times revealed late last month that the Europeans were prepared to grant Iran a “limited extension” of the deadline before activating the “trigger mechanism” if Tehran accepted specific conditions related to uranium enrichment and transparency of nuclear facilities.

In this context, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that his country had clarified its “principled” positions, indicating that consultations with the Europeans were continuing without any concrete concessions.

While IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi called on Iran to demonstrate “full transparency,” he expressed optimism about the return of international inspectors to Iranian nuclear sites later this year, stressing the “need to restore normal relations with Iran” in accordance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
