WASHINGTON: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced the extension of existing restrictions on U.S. commercial flights operating in Iraqi airspace. The ban, affecting flights flying at lower altitudes, will now continue until October 2027 due to ongoing military operations and security risks in the region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the FAA’s decision to prolong the flight restrictions was influenced by the unstable security environment and active military operations in Iraq that pose potential threats to aviation safety. The extended restrictions not only affect U.S. carriers but also apply to foreign airlines that conduct joint operations with U.S. companies. This measure is intended to safeguard all flights that could be exposed to hazardous conditions in the conflicted airspace.

The extension follows a recent action by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which last month levied a $250,000 fine against Air Canada. The fine was imposed after the airline allegedly violated t
he FAA’s directives by flying in the restricted zones over Iraq in 2022 and 2023. This incident underscores the strict enforcement of airspace regulations by U.S. authorities and the serious consequences of non-compliance.
