Far-right wins Italian legislative elections

Baghdad The extreme right won an absolute majority in the Italian Parliament after winning the legislative elections.

Italy entered a new stage in its history with the victory of Giorgia Meloni, leader of the “Italy Brothers” party, in the legislative elections at the head of a coalition that must agree on a government formation that faces the stifling economic crisis and addresses Europe’s fears and markets’ concerns.

Meloni, who is the first woman to head the ministry in the history of Italy, collected more than 26% of the votes, while her coalition won about 44% of the votes, ensuring her a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

In the coming days, Meloni will hold talks with her two allies, Matteo Salvini, leader of the anti-immigration League, and Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the right-wing Forza Italia party, with the aim of forming a government that will not see the light before the end of next October at the earliest.
