Istanbul: Turkish side Fenerbah§e began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Polish visitors G³rnik Zabrze in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie at the Chopane Stadium last night. The result leaves the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg, to be played next Wednesday, July 29, at the Arena Zabrze in Poland, where Fenerbah§e will need only a win or a draw to advance.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fenerbah§e started strongly, dominating possession and creating numerous dangerous chances, but their efforts were thwarted by a resolute G³rnik Zabrze defense. The Turkish side finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Brazilian Anderson Talisca curled a well-placed left-footed free-kick into the bottom left corner, a goal that held until halftime.

In the second half, Talisca almost added a second goal in the 54th minute when he rose high to meet Kerim Aktrkoglu's corner kick, heading it powerfully towards goal, but G³rnik Zabrze goalkeeper Philipp Schulze made a brilliant save. Two minutes later, the same player headed another cross from Left-Morgan with a perfectly placed header from the center of the penalty area towards the bottom right corner, only for the goalkeeper to make the save, followed by the post.

Fenerbah§e continued their intense attacking efforts, and Bartl Elmaz unleashed a rocket of a shot with his right foot from outside the penalty area in the 63rd minute, which rebounded off the crossbar, denying the Turkish team a chance to extend their lead. The final minutes saw no change to the scoreline, despite Fenerbah§e coach Ismail Kartal's attempts to revitalize the attack by bringing on Spaniard Marco Asensio, -z Aydin, new English signing Mason Greenwood, and Frenchman Sadiki Cherif.
