FIFA and Iran Set to Decide on 2026 World Cup Participation

Zurich: A crucial meeting between FIFA and the Iranian Football Federation is set to determine Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting, which is expected to take place next week, will address Iran's final position regarding the tournament. This decision will either confirm their participation or uphold their withdrawal if the conditions requested by the Iranian side are not met.

Reports suggest that Iran's decision could directly impact the Asian qualifying process. Depending on the outcome, Iraq might qualify directly for the World Cup or be forced into a playoff match. The developments follow Iranian authorities' request for official security guarantees before confirming their participation in the tournament, which will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.

According to Iranian media reports, Tehran has emphasized the importance of guarantees for the safety of the national team delegation, covering transportation, accommodation, and oversight of training sessions and matches under FIFA supervision.

Iran has been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with all matches scheduled to be played in the United States. They are set to play two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, with a potential face-off against the United States in the knockout stages if both teams perform well in their groups.

If Iran officially withdraws from the tournament, FIFA will need to find a replacement team to fill the vacant spot. This could lead to changes in the Asian qualification landscape, offering other teams a significant opportunity to reach the World Cup.
