FIFA Excludes English Referees from Argentina’s Matches in 2026 World Cup

London: FIFA has decided to exclude English referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor from officiating Argentina's matches during the 2026 World Cup.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this decision is rooted in historical tensions between Argentina and Britain, which are linked to the 1982 Falklands War. The conflict, also known as the Malvinas War, continues to affect relations between the two countries.

FIFA aims to avoid any potential controversy that could arise from having English referees officiate Argentina's matches. The Mirror newspaper reported that this precautionary measure is intended to prevent any issues related to the longstanding political tensions. Furthermore, Michael Oliver had previously been excluded from officiating the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France due to similar concerns.

The Argentine national team has continued its journey in the 2026 World Cup with a remarkable comeback, defeating Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16 after trailing by two goals. This victory secured Argentina's place in the quarterfinals, further intensifying the global spotlight on their matches.
