Jeddah: A fire erupted on a Saudi ship after it was targeted while sailing in the Red Sea, as confirmed by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) this morning. The Saudi-owned vessel, named “Encelia,” was attacked, leading to a fire on its bow. However, no injuries were reported among the crew members.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the SPA quoted an official from the General Authority for Transport, who stated that all necessary measures have been taken to secure the vessel, ensure the safety of the crew, and protect the marine environment. The Saudi agency highlighted that such attacks violate international laws and conventions designed to safeguard commercial vessels and their crews.

The incident follows an announcement by the Yemeni Houthi group last night, claiming responsibility for targeting two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea using ballistic missiles and drones, which resulted in fires on board. The group also declared a “maritime embargo” on Saudi Arabia in response to a blockade they accuse Riyadh of imposing on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.

The conflict in Yemen, which began over 11 years ago, has seen a reduction in fighting since April 2022, despite sporadic clashes. The Saudi-led coalition supports the Yemeni government in Aden, while the Houthis, who have controlled several provinces and cities since 2014, are allegedly backed by Iran. Recent days have seen an escalation in the conflict, further exacerbating tensions in the region.
