Foreign Ministry Announces Upcoming International Meeting on Syria with Iraq’s Participation


Baghdad: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed Iraq’s participation in a new international meeting on Syria, stressing that there is no agreement on the date of the expected visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to the capital, Baghdad. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hisham Al-Alawi, stated in a statement to the Iraqi National News Agency / NINA / today, Saturday, that “the Iraqi government is closely following the developments in Syria, which is a neighboring country with which we have a common border of about 600 kilometers and a set of bilateral political, security and economic files, and we are keen to push towards the stability of Syria.”



According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Alawi highlighted Iraq’s previous involvement in significant discussions concerning the Syrian situation, mentioning meetings in Aqaba, Riyadh, and Paris. He suggested that an upcoming meeting is scheduled for next month in Brussels, at the headquarters of the European Union, focusing on the Syrian issue. He emphasized Iraq’s belief in the importance of cooperation among Syria and regional countries to implement recommendations from these discussions. The goal is to form a comprehensive Syrian government inclusive of all groups, demonstrating a commitment to combating extremism, respecting state sovereignty, and mitigating the risks posed by terrorist groups within Syria.



Regarding the anticipated visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to Baghdad, Al-Alawi clarified that technical and artistic considerations are being discussed concerning the nature of the visit. Preparations are underway between the two ministries to finalize the visit, but a specific date has yet to be agreed upon.
