Foreign Ministry Engages with New UNAMI Head on Transition Strategy for Mission’s Conclusion


BAGHDAD: The Iraqi Foreign Ministry engaged in discussions with the newly appointed head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) regarding measures to gradually conclude the mission’s tasks. Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Mohammed Bahr Al-Ulum, the Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations, met with Ambassador Mohammed Al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to address the future of the mission.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Ambassador Al-Ulum extended his congratulations to Ambassador Al-Hassan on his new role and expressed the ministry’s support in facilitating the mission’s objectives. The undersecretary acknowledged the contributions of UNAMI in aiding Iraq over the years and conveyed his hopes for Ambassador Al-Hassan’s success in what he termed a historic transition for the mission.

The meeting focused on reinforcing cooperation with Iraqi authorities to implement procedures for a phased conclusion of UNAMI’s operations. Ambassador A
l-Ulum assured that Iraq is prepared to offer the necessary assistance to ensure a smooth transition.

Ambassador Al-Hassan, in response, emphasized his commitment to overseeing a safe and gradual handover of responsibilities, signaling a significant shift in the United Nations’ engagement in Iraq.
