BEIRUT: The defense ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations have voiced their concern over the security of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) amid escalating tensions in the region. The ministers issued a joint statement urging support for both UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces to maintain stability in the country, following accusations that Israel has been deliberately targeting UNIFIL sites.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the defense ministers from the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, and Japan highlighted their apprehension regarding recent developments in Lebanon and the potential for further escalation. The statement emphasized the necessity of safeguarding UNIFIL peacekeepers, asserting that their protection is a shared responsibility among all parties involved in any conflict.
The situation in Lebanon has deteriorated since October 2023, with increasing Israeli military actions marked by aerial and artillery bombardm
ents. These actions have intensified recently, extending to the capital city of Beirut and resulting in significant casualties and displacement. The violence has claimed the lives of thousands of Lebanese citizens and forced over a million people to flee their homes, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The G7’s call for international support comes at a critical juncture as Lebanon grapples with the compounded effects of ongoing aggression and its internal socio-economic challenges. The joint statement from the G7 defense ministers underscores the need for coordinated international efforts to ensure the security and stability of Lebanon during this tumultuous period.
