BEIRUT: Lebanese Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel has called for an end to Lebanon's involvement in a geopolitical conflict between Israel and Iran, which he says compromises the country's sovereignty and affects its people. Gemayel argues that Lebanon's institutions are paralyzed due to external influences and calls for international and Arab support to restore the nation's autonomy. According to National News Agency-Lebanon, Gemayel, in an interview with Al-Arabiya, emphasized that Lebanon is caught in the crossfire of a power struggle between Israel and Iran, leading to the dysfunction of state institutions and a loss of national decision-making. He claimed that the Lebanese presidency is under Iranian control and will remain so until Iran decides to release its grip. "Lebanon is paying a heavy price through destruction, displacement, and chaos, all to serve Iran's interests and to allow Hezbollah to continue defending Iran," he stated. Gemayel noted that before the assassination of key Hezbollah leaders , there were calls within the group for a ceasefire, offering hope for resolution. However, following these events, Iran allegedly took direct control of Hezbollah, deepening its influence. Gemayel also commented on Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati's recent condemnation of Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf's statement regarding Tehran's willingness to negotiate with France on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Gemayel welcomed Mikati's stance, despite its late arrival, stressing the importance of international recognition of Lebanon's dire situation. He further highlighted the departure of Syrian refugees from Lebanon, which he believes supports the Kataeb Party's long-standing argument that their presence is mainly due to economic reasons. Gemayel stressed the need for restoring Lebanon's sovereignty and ensuring that the Lebanese army remains the sole armed force in the country, as part of rebuilding the state. "We need Lebanon to become a true State again, like all other nations," he urged. "A State with full sovereignty, defined and protected borders, the exclusive right to make decisions on war and peace, and the ability to revive its economy." Gemayel concluded by emphasizing the necessity of regaining sovereignty and re-establishing state authority to begin Lebanon's recovery.
