New York:Foreign ministers Fuad Hussein of Iraq and Johann David Wadephul of Germany engaged in discussions on Thursday concerning the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and the necessity for international cooperation to address it.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s 81st session in New York. Both ministers highlighted bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen cooperation between Iraq and Germany. They also addressed regional developments and their implications for security and stability.

Fuad Hussein emphasized Iraq’s efforts to bolster its position and relationships with neighboring countries, contributing to regional stability and de-escalation. He acknowledged Germany’s support in Iraq’s fight against terrorism and stressed the significance of Iraqi-German relations.

The ministers reviewed the recent visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi to Germany, noting its importance for enhancing bilateral relations. They also discussed the impact of the Strait of Hormuz crisis on maritime navigation and the global economy, underscoring the need for collaborative international efforts to manage the situation.

The German minister highlighted the importance of Iraq-Germany relations and expressed Germany’s commitment to working with relevant parties to mitigate the crisis’s impact on Iraq and the region. He praised Iraq’s efforts in fostering dialogue and supporting regional security.

Hussein urged Germany to reconsider its travel advisories for German citizens visiting Iraq, citing improvements in Iraq’s security situation. The German minister indicated readiness to review these advisories in line with evolving bilateral relations and the security context in Iraq.

Both sides also discussed the potential benefits of convening a meeting of the Joint Iraqi-German Committee to further advance bilateral cooperation and strengthen ties between the two countries.
