Basra: The Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, has confirmed that the threat of a gas leak at the Southern Fertilizer Plant has been mitigated. Speaking directly from the site of the incident, Al-Eidani assured that efforts are underway to uncover the reasons behind the leak.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Governor Al-Eidani addressed reporters on Sunday evening, stating that the situation has been brought under control with the pump responsible for the leak now shut down. As a result of the incident, 83 individuals sustained injuries, with some cases being critical. However, several injured have stabilized and have been released from medical care. The governor emphasized that directives have been given to the Civil Defense Director to seal any remaining outlets of gas, marking the end of the immediate threat.
Al-Eidani also mentioned that a comprehensive investigation is set to take place to determine the root cause of the leak. A special committee has been formed, including members from Civil Defense, National Security, and Intelligence, to thoroughly examine the malfunction. Additionally, the area surrounding the incident has been secured to ensure safety and facilitate the investigation process.
