Arnold: National team coach Graham Arnold affirmed that the Gulf Cup is an important tournament and an opportunity for the players to make Iraq proud. According to National Iraqi News Agency, Arnold stated in a press conference Wednesday evening, “We will go to the Gulf Cup to win the championship. I selected this new squad and I am completely satisfied with it.”

He elaborated that the Gulf Cup squad consisted of only 35 players, registered 30 days in advance, with the option to replace five players in addition to an injured player. Arnold mentioned that he has already made six substitutions, the latest being a few days ago when Hussein Ali was replaced by Mohammed Delawar due to a medical report on Ali’s injury.

Arnold emphasized the importance of passion in the team, stating, “Anyone who lacks passion will not be on the Iraqi squad. I alone select the team, and there is no pressure.” He also addressed the situation of Muntadhar Al-Majid, who requested to focus on his club career for now. However, Arnold made it clear that a player should not choose whether or not to join the national team.

He concluded by stressing the need for complete dedication, “I want a player who is 100% focused on playing for the national team. I have experience from previous years, and I know one thing: a player’s passion must be 100%. When a player’s passion wanes even slightly, he will not represent his country and family with the required pride.”
