Baghdad: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres called for urgent reforms to the UN Security Council, warning that the Council’s “fragile” legitimacy could endanger global peace if it remains paralyzed and fails to fulfill its primary role.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, speaking via video link from Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital, on the occasion of United Nations Day, which marks the 80th anniversary of the organization’s founding, Guterres affirmed: “The Security Council, as the main body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, possesses broad powers, including imposing sanctions and authorizing military intervention. However, the veto power enjoyed by the five permanent members often hinders decision-making and draws widespread criticism.”
