Ankara: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to travel to Turkey for an official visit, during which he will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The visit is part of Guterres’ annual solidarity trip during Ramadan to demonstrate appreciation for Turkey’s efforts in aiding refugees.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, UN Spokesperson St©phane Dujarric stated that Guterres aims to express his gratitude for Turkey’s exceptional generosity in hosting millions of refugees. Turkey currently shelters approximately 2.5 million refugees and asylum seekers, including over 2.3 million Syrians, making it one of the countries with the largest refugee populations globally.

During his visit, Guterres will also engage with civil society organizations actively working to support refugees within Turkey. In recognition of his efforts and the broader work of the UN, Guterres will be awarded the “Atatrk International Peace Prize.” The award comes at a time marked by significant global challenges and humanitarian needs.
