Baghdad: The General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring announced the recording of 84 earthquakes within the Iraqi seismic monitoring network during the month of August. These earthquakes were distributed between within Iraq and neighboring regions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Authority’s Seismic Monitoring Department stated in its monthly report: “41 earthquakes were recorded within Iraqi territory, compared to 43 outside Iraq near its borders. The magnitude of the seismic events ranged from 1 to 7.4, with focal depths ranging from 7 to 38 kilometers.”

The report further explained: “Seismic activity was clearly concentrated in four Iraqi governorates, with Kirkuk Governorate recording the highest number at 25 earthquakes, followed by Sulaymaniyah Governorate with 9, Diyala Governorate with 6, and Erbil Governorate with one.”

He pointed out that “eastern and southeastern Kirkuk Governorate witnessed seismic activity for four days, from July 30 to August 2, with a total of 46 tremors recorded during that period. Citizens felt several of the main and other strong tremors, particularly in areas near the epicenters. The tremors were felt across most of Kirkuk Governorate and parts of the Kurdistan Region.”

The report further stated that “western and southwestern Iraq were free of any significant seismic activity during the month. The distribution of seismic activity reflects the movement of the Arabian Plate and Iraq’s location within the northeastern region adjacent to continental collision zones.”
