Baghdad: The head of the electoral administration at the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), Judge Amer Al-Husseini, has issued a cautionary note regarding the potential difficulties that could arise if the election law is amended while the operational schedule is already in progress.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Husseini expressed concerns in a press statement, highlighting the habitual nature of legislators to modify the election law in most elections. He noted that the commission has already embarked on implementing an operational schedule, yet discussions continue about possible amendments to the law.

Al-Husseini stated that the commission is currently working under the existing law, which will be in effect on election day unless changes are made. He emphasized that the commission remains neutral on the issue of law amendments, acknowledging the political implications and choosing not to align with any party advocating for or against such changes.

He stressed the importance of swift legislative action if there is an intention to amend the law, as any further advancement in the commission’s operational schedule could complicate its efforts in case of an emergency or a sudden legal amendment.
