New Delhi: The Indian army announced a new exchange of fire with its Pakistani counterpart on Saturday morning, as tensions between the two countries have escalated following a deadly attack in Kashmir.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the tensions have intensified to unprecedented levels after the killing of 26 people in a tourist area in Kashmir on Tuesday. India has accused Pakistani elements of participating in the attack, a claim that Pakistan has vehemently denied.

A militant group calling itself the “Kashmir Resistance” has claimed responsibility for the attack, posting a message on social media. Indian security agencies suspect that this group, also known as the Resistance Front, is a front for Pakistan-based militant organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen.

In the wake of the attack, both nuclear-armed nations have enacted a series of retaliatory measures. India has suspended the crucial Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan has closed its airspace to Air India flights. These actions underscore the longstanding and bitter dispute over the mountainous region of Kashmir, which both countries claim in full but only partially control.
