Baghdad:The Head of the Federal Integrity Commission, Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, and US Chargé d’Affaires to Iraq Steven Fagin engaged in discussions on enhancing cooperation in the recovery of smuggled funds and the extradition of wanted individuals.

According to the Iraqi News Agency, Al-Lami emphasized that combating corruption and safeguarding public funds necessitate both national and international collaboration. He highlighted the need for strengthened efforts to pursue individuals involved in corruption and illicit enrichment and to recover wanted persons and smuggled assets.

Al-Lami and Fagin explored ways to activate international cooperation mechanisms, drawing on the United Nations Convention against Corruption’s Chapter V, which focuses on asset recovery. Al-Lami emphasized the importance of overcoming hurdles such as dual nationality, legislative differences, and political targeting claims in the asset recovery process.

The meeting also covered potential cooperation between the Federal Integrity Co
mmission and the US in preventing and combating corruption. Al-Lami underscored the need for preventive measures that align with the UN Convention’s Chapter II, promoting integrity, transparency, and accountability in public fund management and government procurement.

Al-Lami noted that enhancing integrity and combating corruption are crucial for creating a secure environment for investment, supporting government efforts to expand investment opportunities, and fostering economic cooperation with foreign entities.

US Chargé d’Affaires Steven Fagin conveyed the United States’ interest in intensifying cooperation with Iraq across various domains. He noted that the bilateral relationship has evolved from military support to include expanded economic cooperation and efforts in integrity and anti-corruption. Fagin emphasized the importance of continued coordination and expertise exchange for the mutual benefit of both nations.
