Baghdad:Chairman of the Federal Integrity Commission, Dr. Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, emphasized the necessity for both national and international cooperation in combating corruption and safeguarding public funds. He highlighted the need for enhanced efforts in pursuing individuals involved in corruption and illicit enrichment and in recovering wanted persons and smuggled assets.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, during a meeting with U.S. Charg© d’Affaires to Iraq Stephen Fagen, Al-Lami stressed the importance of activating international cooperation mechanisms. He advocated for the full utilization of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), particularly Chapter V on asset recovery.

Al-Lami pointed out that recovering funds and assets derived from corruption is a foundational aspect of global anti-corruption efforts. He also noted the need to overcome challenges such as dual nationality, differences in national legislation, and politically motivated targeting allegations.

He underscored the significance of prevention in anti-corruption strategies, aligning with Chapter II of the UN Convention. This includes developing preventive measures, enhancing integrity, transparency, accountability, and expanding the role of civil society and media.

Al-Lami also highlighted that strengthening integrity and combating corruption create a secure environment for investment, emphasizing the importance of supporting government efforts to expand investment opportunities and economic cooperation with foreign entities.

U.S. Charg© d’Affaires Stephen Fagen expressed a desire to intensify U.S.-Iraq cooperation, particularly as it evolves from military to broader economic cooperation, including areas of integrity and anti-corruption. He underscored the importance of continued coordination and expertise exchange to serve mutual interests.

The meeting further explored cooperative prospects between the Federal Integrity Commission and the U.S. in areas like corruption prevention, deterrence, enforcement, and the exchange of expertise. Discussions also focused on protecting public funds and recovering illicit assets.
