Interior Ministry Announces Strategy to Counter Misinformation and Rumours

Baghdad:The Ministry of Interior has announced a comprehensive strategy comprising three critical measures aimed at combating rumours and misinformation. The Ministry emphasized the importance of verifying information before its dissemination to safeguard societal interests.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Ministry spokesperson Colonel Mohammed Ali Al-Hassoun highlighted the significance the Ministry places on addressing misinformation and rumours, particularly those undermining the security establishment through social media platforms. This concern arises from the potential impact such misinformation can have on public opinion and trust in security institutions.

Al-Hassoun elaborated that the Ministry of Interior’s Relations and Media Directorate, led by Major General Miqdad Miri Hassan, is actively engaged in fostering responsible media interactions. The Rumour-Fighting Department is tasked with a critical role in tracking, verifying, and debunking false information while ensuring the public is informed of accurate facts in collaboration with pertinent authorities.

The Ministry is also working on swiftly identifying and addressing rumours in line with established regulations. Efforts include enhancing public awareness campaigns to ensure accurate information reaches citizens. Al-Hassoun urged the public to depend on official sources, avoiding the spread of information from unverified origins until its accuracy is confirmed.

He further emphasized that the fight against rumours is a collective responsibility necessitating coordinated efforts between security forces, media, and public awareness. Truth and awareness are fundamental in safeguarding society and reinforcing trust in the security establishment.
