Tehran: The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced early Tuesday morning that it had shot down a US MQ-1 drone west of the Strait of Hormuz. The Revolutionary Guard said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency that Iranian air defense systems detected the drone west of the Strait of Hormuz before targeting and downing it.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the MQ-1 drone was manufactured in the United States in the 1990s and was initially designed for advanced surveillance and reconnaissance before being later equipped with cameras and missiles.

Separately, Hormozgan province reported in a statement that two fishing boats near the Kargan pier in the city of Minab were attacked by a US drone, and the fishermen on board are still missing.
