Tehran: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, has expressed appreciation for Iraq’s proposal to mediate dialogue between Tehran and Washington, emphasizing that any negotiations should follow established diplomatic protocols to be effective.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei highlighted during a press conference in Tehran that diplomacy is crucial for safeguarding Iran’s national interests and will be utilized when beneficial. Addressing the Iraqi prime minister’s initiative for hosting direct talks between Iran and the US, Baqaei commended Iraq’s dedication to regional stability and security. He stated that Iran is open to the genuine efforts of neighboring countries to reduce tensions, but stressed that proper diplomatic procedures are essential for realistic dialogue.
Baqaei further clarified that the official communication channel through interest sections in Switzerland and Washington is active, focusing solely on nuclear issues. He mentioned that there is no need for new contacts at present and that discussions will not entertain preconditions or unrelated topics.
Addressing Iran’s diplomatic presence in Venezuela, Baqaei confirmed that the ambassador and staff are fully operational, dismissing reports of an Iranian company’s exit over a year ago as unrelated to current projects. He criticized US actions in the Caribbean, aligning with Venezuelan authorities’ accusations against Washington’s attempts to exploit the country’s resources.
On the topic of Yemen, Baqaei reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, describing them as foundational principles. He warned that efforts undermining Yemen benefit Israeli interests and threaten regional security, advocating for Yemeni-led dialogue as the path to lasting stability.
Regarding Israeli provocations, Baqaei asserted Iran’s readiness to respond to any threats, emphasizing the importance of coordinated action to curb Israel’s aggressive activities. He reiterated Iran’s commitment to protecting regional sovereignty and warned of decisive responses to aggression.
In response to allegations of Russians recruiting Iranian nationals for the Ukraine conflict, Baqaei stated that Iranian embassies in Russia and Ukraine are actively monitoring the situation. He noted that Russia has denied these claims and assured that any harm to Iranian nationals will be addressed promptly.
Baqaei also commented on a recent attack on Afghan refugees in Iran, underlining that the security of all residents, including refugees, is a priority. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
Discussing Iran-Russia relations, Baqaei dismissed European claims of Iranian military support to Russia as baseless. He reaffirmed that Iran’s defense ties with Russia are strictly cooperative and defensive, emphasizing that Tehran’s relations with Moscow are not directed against any third party.
Lastly, Baqaei condemned a terrorist attack at a mosque in Homs, Syria, and expressed concern over reports of government crackdowns on civilians. He urged Syrian authorities to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
Baqaei also addressed US sanctions against European individuals combating online hate speech and child abuse, warning that such measures could have unintended consequences for European nations. He stressed the importance of recognizing the risks of aligning with US policies that could adversely affect European citizens and institutions.
