Iran Proposes Draft Deal to United States on Nuclear Program

Baghdad: Iran presented the United States with a draft deal regarding its nuclear program amid the threat of reimposing UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had previously stated that Tehran had submitted a proposal to the “European Troika” on how to avoid the reimposition of sanctions. He also called on the UN Security Council to “intervene and choose diplomacy over confrontation” in light of the upcoming council vote on the sanctions issue.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Amwaj website, which specializes in Iranian affairs, wrote: “Negotiations between Araqchi and the US President’s Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, in recent days have concluded with Iran presenting a proposal to hold immediate negotiations on an interim nuclear agreement, followed by negotiations on the ‘final deal.'”

The proposal indicates that Iran wants to resume negotiations to conclude an interim agreement that includes provisions on withdrawing and reducing its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. In return, Iran wants the European Troika to stop trying to restore UN sanctions and propose lifting other restrictions imposed on the country.

In addition, to provide “sufficient time and space” for dialogue on the interim agreement, Iran is proposing to extend the validity of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, for several months.

After concluding the interim agreement, Tehran expects the United States to provide guarantees that it will not “aggressively target Iran again.” In exchange, Tehran will begin withdrawing its enriched uranium. According to the Iranian plan, these measures will be followed by the cancellation of Resolution 2231, the reduction of uranium enrichment to 20%, the lifting of US sanctions, and the start of negotiations to reach a final deal.
