Bukhara: Iranian and Uzbek surgeons have performed the first liver transplant surgery in the historic city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Speaking with IRNA, Saman Nikeghbalian, the Director of the Shiraz Transplant Center at Abu-Ali Sina Hospital, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, announced that the first successful liver transplant surgery was performed in Bukhara city.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, this achievement was made possible through collaboration with transplant teams from the National Hospital of Tashkent, the National Emergency Center of Bukhara, and the transplant team from Abu Ali Sina Hospital in Shiraz. Nikeghbalian noted that the surgery was conducted as a living donor transplant and that the patient is currently in excellent condition. He emphasized that this successful operation marks the official launch of the Organ Transplant Department in Bukhara.

Additionally, he stated that the surgery will pave the way for expanding liver transplant services in Bukhara and developing other advanced surgical and treatment services for various diseases, particularly in the field of cancer. Liver transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a diseased or failing liver with a healthy one from a donor. It serves as the only option to treat liver failure, which can occur suddenly or due to other chronic medical conditions such as hepatitis, infection, alcoholism, biliary atresia, etc.
