Iraq and Algeria Discuss Algerian Inmates’ Conditions in Iraqi Prisons

Baghdad: The Director General of the Department of Judicial Relations at the Ministry of Justice, Ahmed Laibi Abdul Hussein, met today at the Ministry building with the Ambassador of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria to Baghdad, Jihad Eddine Belkacem. The meeting focused on discussing the situation of Algerian inmates in Iraqi correctional facilities.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry stated in a press release that the discussions covered the conditions of Algerian detainees and the mechanisms for organizing consular visits by the Algerian Embassy to these inmates. The aim is to ensure regular and systematic visits to monitor the wellbeing of the detainees.

The Algerian Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Justice for its continued efforts in overseeing the conditions of Algerian detainees. He underscored the necessity of enhancing joint cooperation between Iraq and Algeria in this regard.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the potential signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. This agreement would facilitate the transfer of Algerian convicts back to Algeria, adhering to established legal frameworks.
