Baghdad:The recent videoconference meeting between Iraq and Syria resulted in an agreement on several measures to improve coordination at their border crossings, facilitating passenger movement and trade between the two nations.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting followed directives from the Iraqi Prime Minister aimed at enhancing communication and trade with Syria by activating the Rabia, Al-Waleed, and Al-Qaim border crossings. The Iraqi delegation, led by Lieutenant General Dr. Omar Adnan Al-Waeli, included key officials such as Dr. Thamer Qasim Dawood and Murtadha Al-Shahmani. The Syrian delegation was headed by Dr. Qutaiba Badawi, with Dr. Khaled Al-Barrad and Mr. Tamim as deputies.

Key measures agreed upon include establishing direct communication channels to exchange information and enhance coordination between the border crossings of both countries. This aims to ensure the smooth flow of commercial operations by addressing any arising obstacles.

Passenger traffic is set to resume at the Al-Waleed border crossing once the completion of passport halls and roads is achieved early next year, with continued entry at Rabia and Al-Qaim crossings. Electronic customs data exchange will be implemented to save time and ensure accuracy regarding information, descriptions, weights, and customs duties.

The agreement also includes reciprocal entry arrangements for drivers to reduce their burden and facilitate trade, the designation of new commercial and passenger lanes for smoother traffic, and allocation of dedicated lanes for fuel tankers and trucks carrying perishable goods.

Additionally, the Rabia border crossing will be expanded by 100 dunams to accommodate more trucks and tankers. Both sides concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of ongoing communication and coordination to strengthen trade and promote mutual economic benefits.
