Baghdad: Iraq and the United Nations Mission (UNAMI) discussed mechanisms for implementing Security Council Resolution 2732. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement: “In the framework of enhancing cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations, an Iraqi delegation headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Mohammed Bahr Al-Ulum, held a meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad, with the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance Claudio Cordone, and the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs Ghulam Mohammed, in the presence of a number of senior United Nations officials in Iraq.”
According to National Iraqi News Agency, during the meeting, the Undersecretary praised the role played by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) since its establishment, stressing that the relationship between Iraq and the United Nations is entering a new phase of cooperation and partnership, in line with Iraq’s priorities and current developments. The two sides also discussed the mechanisms for implementing Security Council Resolution 2732 on ending the mission’s work, and reviewed the developments of the agreed transition and liquidation plan, in addition to the requirements and implementation mechanisms for the next stage. The meeting resulted in agreement on a set of executive measures in this framework.
For their part, Claudio Cordone and members of the United Nations delegation expressed their appreciation for the cooperation shown by the Iraqi government in the process of gradually ending the work of the UNAMI mission, stressing the importance of continuing coordination to ensure a smooth transition that achieves common interests.
The meeting was attended from the Iraqi side by the Advisor to the Prime Minister, Farhad Abdul Aziz Alaa Al-Din, and the Head of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Fadhel Al-Rahim.
