New york: Iraq assumed the presidency of the Asia-Pacific Group for July and received the group’s support for its candidacy for membership in the Human Rights Council for the period 2026-2028.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an official statement that the monthly meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group for June was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. During this meeting, the group’s countries announced their support and endorsement of the Republic of Iraq’s candidacy for membership in the Human Rights Council for the period 2026-2028.

The endorsement is attributed to the diplomatic efforts made by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, facilitated through its permanent Missions and Embassies globally. These efforts are a part of the candidacy campaign, which underscores Iraq’s commitment to human rights values and principles.

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, Abbas Kadhim Obaid, stated that this endorsement is a significant milestone in the candidacy process. It places additional responsibility on the Iraqi delegation ahead of the elections scheduled for the UN General Assembly in October 2025.

Obaid also highlighted that Iraq’s candidacy for the Human Rights Council membership is grounded in national achievements and government measures to promote human rights. This is further supported by Iraq’s cooperative engagement with relevant UN mechanisms.

During the meeting, the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, acting as Chair of the Group for June, announced Iraq’s upcoming chairmanship in July 2025. This decision reflects the growing confidence in Iraq’s active role within the UN system.
