Baghdad: A joint meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was convened to deliberate on Iraq’s candidacy for membership in the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) for the term 2026-2029. This discussion comes in anticipation of the elections to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, between May 29 and 30, 2025.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting featured notable attendees, including the Undersecretary for Multilateral Relations and Legal Affairs, Ambassador Shorsh Khaled Saeed; the Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities, Engineer Ali Hussein Abdul Amir; the Director General of the Housing Department, Engineer Sadiq Mohammed Hassan Al-Fartousi; and the Director of the Department of Housing Studies and Policies, Dr. Fadaa Maarouf Mahmoud. Several employees from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also participated in the discussions.
The focus of the meeting was on strategizing and implementing measures that would bolster Iraq’s bid for the Council membership. This effort is part of Iraq’s broader strategy to increase its engagement in international platforms and to enhance its contributions to sustainable urban development globally.
