Iraq Elected To Chair The Eleventh Conference Of The Convention On The Prohibition Of Cluster Munitions

Baghdad The Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Abdul Karim Hashim Mustafa, was elected to the position of President of the Eleventh Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions (CCM) for the period 2023-2022, during the work of the Second Review Conference of the Convention held at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva for the period 2023-2022. 20 – 2021/9/21.

In a statement, the Permanent Representative of Iraq expressed his thanks and appreciation to the States Parties for giving them confidence in Iraq to assume this position, stressing: “Iraq is one of the countries most affected by the remnants of cluster munitions, and that this nomination is an expression of the commitment of the Iraqi government and the relevant national authorities to implement the terms and provisions of the Convention. “.

He reiterated Iraq’s aspiration to work objectively and constructively with all state parties, to achieve the objectives of the agreement in accordance with the Lausanne Action Plan.

It is noteworthy that Iraq joined the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions in 2013, and the number of member states of the Convention is currently (110) countries.

Since its accession to the Convention, Iraq has also worked closely with state parties, international organizations and non-governmental organizations, to implement its obligations under the provisions of the Convention to clear all Iraqi territory of cluster munitions remnants
