Iraq Excluded from Top Holders of US Bonds List

Baghdad: The US Treasury Department announced on Sunday that the total holdings of US bonds by countries around the world this year exceeded $9 trillion. The Treasury Department revealed in a 2025 table that "worldwide holdings of US bonds reached $9 trillion and 50 billion."

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Japan holds the position as the largest holder of US bonds, with $1.13 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom, China, the Cayman Islands, and Canada. Saudi Arabia and the UAE were among the top twenty holders of US bonds in the Arab world, with Saudi Arabia holding $131 billion and the UAE $111 billion.

The US Treasury table indicated that Iraq was not among the top twenty holders, despite having $32.6 billion in US bonds in 2023. It is noteworthy that Saudi Arabia was the only Arab country to make the list of the largest holders of US bonds for 2024, ranking 17th with holdings of $137.5 billion.
