Baghdad: The Meteorological Authority recorded 57 earthquakes inside Iraq during last July. The General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring in the Ministry of Transport announced today, Thursday, that these earthquakes were part of a larger seismic activity observed in the region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismic Monitoring released a detailed monthly report on seismic activity in Iraq and neighboring regions for July 2026. The report highlighted that a total of 102 earthquakes were recorded by the Iraqi seismic monitoring network, with 57 occurring within Iraq and 45 near its borders.

The report specified that Kirkuk Governorate experienced the highest concentration of seismic activity, recording 32 earthquakes in the Daquq area and others. Sulaymaniyah Governorate followed with eight earthquakes in the Kalar, Darbandikhan, and Sharabazher areas, while Diyala Governorate recorded five earthquakes in the Khanaqin area.

Additionally, four earthquakes were reported in Erbil Governorate, affecting the Koya, Choman, and Shaqlawa areas. Nineveh Governorate also recorded four earthquakes, particularly in the areas of Tel Keif, Sinjar, and Hatra. Other regions, including Wasit (Kut), Maysan (Amara), Basra (Qurna), and Dhi Qar (Rifai), each experienced one earthquake.

The report further noted the absence of seismic activity in the western and southwestern regions of Iraq during July. The statement explained that due to the movement of the Arabian Plate and Iraq's geographical positioning, seismic activity tends to increase towards continental collision zones, especially in the north and northeast.

In addition to domestic seismic events, the report included data on 29 earthquakes recorded within Iranian territory and 16 within Turkish territory, both near the Iraqi border. The commission reassured its commitment to continuous seismic monitoring through the Iraqi Seismic Monitoring Network, aiming to enhance seismic awareness and provide accurate information to relevant authorities and citizens.
