Baghdad: The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the historic vote by the U.S. Congress, in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, to repeal the Authorizations for the Use of Military Force (AUMFs) against Iraq issued in 1991 and 2002.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the ministry stated that completing the repeal process lays the groundwork for a new framework of relations based on respect for Iraq's sovereignty and the closure of the legacy of war.

The ministry clarified that repealing the two authorizations does not undermine counterterrorism efforts, noting that the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force, which was issued in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks to address threats posed by Al-Qaeda and affiliated terrorist organizations, remains in effect.

The statement reaffirmed the Iraqi government's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in a manner that contributes to building a long-term partnership between the two countries.
