Iraq Secures Gas Supply Agreement with Turkmenistan for Power Stations


BAGHDAD: Iraq has reached a pivotal agreement with Turkmenistan to secure a steady supply of gas, aiming to bolster its power generation capabilities. The agreement, signed by Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Eng. Ziyad Ali Fadhil, and Turkmen Minister of State for Gas Affairs, Maqsad Babayev, outlines the provision of 20 million cubic meters of Turkmen gas per day to support Iraq’s power plants.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Minister of Electricity emphasized the critical role of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in facilitating this agreement, which is expected to enhance the functionality of Iraq’s gas stations and stabilize the national power network. The transportation of Turkmen gas to Iraq will occur through the Iranian pipeline network, utilizing a swap mechanism in collaboration with Swiss company Loxstone Energy.

The agreement marks the culmination of over a year of technical efforts, including numerous meetings, mutual visits, and the prior signing of a memorandum of understand
ing. This strategic partnership is anticipated to significantly contribute to Iraq’s energy infrastructure and address long-standing power shortages in the country.
