Baghdad: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Mohammed Ali Tamim, announced today that Iraq has achieved membership in the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for the first time since the board’s establishment in 2018.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this membership marks a major accomplishment for Iraqi diplomacy, allowing the country to hold its position on the Executive Board until 2029. This will enable Iraq to play a significant role in shaping international policies concerning sustainable urban development and human settlements.

The achievement was the result of considerable efforts by the Iraqi delegation during the second session of the General Assembly in Nairobi. The Executive Board elections were conducted with the presence of the Iraqi delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Dr. Mohammed Ali Tamim.

The General Assembly, known as the supreme legislative body of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme
, includes all UN member states. It is responsible for setting general policies and establishing the global urban agenda, focusing on sustainable urban development and enhancing living conditions in smart cities and human settlements worldwide.

The Minister highlighted that Iraq’s inclusion in the council will enhance its international presence in this sector and enable it to contribute to the development of international policies that support sustainable urban development. This participation is expected to positively influence national development efforts and improve the quality of life in Iraqi cities.
