Seville: President Abdul Latif Rashid highlighted Iraq’s progress and called for international support during the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain. He emphasized the need for global cooperation to overcome Iraq’s challenges stemming from its history of wars and conflicts.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Rashid addressed the impact of past dictatorial regimes, economic sanctions, and unplanned policies that have contributed to Iraq’s economic underdevelopment. He noted Iraq’s current security stability and economic progress, pointing out the necessity for international collaboration to further reconstruction efforts and improve living conditions for Iraqis.

Rashid detailed the launch of Iraq’s 2024-2028 five-year development plan, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted the recent completion of a general population and housing census, a critical step in enhancing development planning and equitable revenue distribution.

The President discussed ongoing improvements in infrastructure and public services across various sectors, including health, education, and sustainable energy. He mentioned Iraq’s focus on environmental issues, such as integrating renewable energy, promoting smart agriculture, and initiating afforestation to combat climate change effects.

Rashid also spoke about Iraq’s increasing partnerships with international organizations and cooperation with United Nations agencies. He highlighted Iraq’s leadership role in the Group of 77 and China in 2024, reflecting its growing influence in international development discussions. He concluded by underscoring the government’s commitment to reforms and the 2030 development agenda, aimed at achieving sustainable development goals through specialized units within ministries.
