Iraq Signs Strategic Internet Transit Deal with Qatar’s Ooredoo

Baghdad: Minister of Communications Mustafa Sanad announced on Thursday the signing of a contract with the Qatari company Ooredoo to transit internet capacity to Europe, noting that the agreement would bolster internet infrastructure.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Sanad emphasized the strategic importance of positioning Iraq as a secure, high-speed internet transit route with low latency. He highlighted that the contract with Ooredoo, a major global internet company, signifies a substantial gain for Iraq, as the entry of Ooredoo into the Iraqi market will enhance the country’s value on the global stage.

Sanad elaborated that Iraq’s selection as the region’s shortest transit route is a significant marketing advantage. He clarified that while alternative transit routes through other Arab nations were considered, Iraq was chosen for its shorter distance and new government pricing policy.

The Minister noted that Iraq aims to become the premier destination for global companies concerning internet services and infrastructure. He assured that the underground cable infrastructure is resilient against weather conditions and regional conflicts, with access points in Al-Faw and Rabia connecting the network effectively.

Sanad also mentioned the swift progress in securing necessary approvals from the Intelligence Service and National Security, indicating that the public sector’s proactive approach surprised Ooredoo. The project is already underway, with an expected completion timeline of three to four months, and approvals have been granted to additional companies from Qatar and Kuwait, while Saudi Arabia’s STC is in the process of finalizing an agreement.
