Baghdad: The Federal Integrity Commission has announced a significant success in its efforts to combat corruption and uphold justice by successfully retrieving a fugitive convict from Turkey. This individual, a former Interior Ministry officer, was previously convicted of smuggling a detainee.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Commission detailed that the extradition of Khalil Nouri Khalil Ajil al-Azzawi was achieved through meticulous procedures and persistent follow-up. The concerted efforts involved the Supreme Judicial Council/Presidency of the Public Prosecution, the Intelligence Service, and the Arab and International Police Directorate at the Ministry of Interior. Al-Azzawi, who had served as an officer at a police station, was found to have deliberately exploited his position for illegal activities.

The Commission further explained that the process was initiated with the preparation and submission of an extradition file to the Presidency of the Public Prosecution. An international red notice and search warrant were issued against al-Azzawi, leading to his eventual extradition to Iraq through diplomatic channels.

The Commission highlighted that the Criminal Court, specializing in integrity cases within the Presidency of the Baghdad Court of Appeal, had previously sentenced al-Azzawi in absentia to ten years in prison. This sentence was based on the provisions of Article 271 of the Penal Code, underscoring the severity of his offenses.
