Washington: The Iraqi Embassy in Washington has firmly stated that Iraq is a sovereign state and possesses the right to conclude agreements and memoranda of understanding. This declaration comes in response to comments from the US State Department Spokesperson regarding Iraq’s recent security agreement with Iran.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Embassy emphasized that Iraq operates as a fully sovereign state, empowered to make agreements in line with its constitution, national laws, and supreme interests. The Embassy further highlighted Iraq’s commitment to maintaining friendly and cooperative relations globally, including with its geographical neighbors, the United States, and other nations, focusing on mutual respect and common interests.

The statement clarified that Iraq’s decision-making is independent and not influenced by any external policies. The Embassy explained that the security agreement with Iran is part of a bilateral initiative aimed at ensuring security and border control, contr
ibuting to the stability and security of both countries and benefiting regional security overall.
