Baghdad: The Iraqi-German memorandum of understanding opens new avenues for cooperation in labor and social security. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Huda Sajjad, met with a delegation from the German Embassy in Baghdad to discuss the details of the agreement and explore ways to expand joint cooperation in the fields of labor, social security, and the exchange of expertise. This collaboration aims to enhance the labor market and strengthen institutional partnerships between the two nations.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry stated in a press release that the Undersecretary’s meeting at her office included a delegation comprising Political and Economic Advisor Franziska Koch, German Trade and Industry Envoy to Iraq Martin Henkelmann, Country Director Sontka Herren, and Baghdad Office Director Duha Jabbar. The discussions focused on several shared issues and mechanisms for transitioning from general understandings to practical and implementable programs and initiatives.

During the discussions, the Undersecretary underscored the importance of activating the Memorandum of Understanding as a framework for institutional cooperation in exchanging expertise, building capacity, and developing the labor system. She highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to expanding its international partnerships to align with the needs of the labor market and the requirements of the forthcoming phase.

The meeting also explored mechanisms for registering Iraqi workers employed by the German Embassy, ensuring their inclusion under the provisions of the Labor Retirement and Social Security Law, thereby guaranteeing their legal and social rights in accordance with applicable legislation.

The Undersecretary emphasized the significance of sustained coordination between the two sides, aiming to transform the memorandum of understanding into enduring institutional cooperation programs that contribute to the development of the labor and social security sector.
