Baghdad: National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji has announced that the Iraqi government has implemented strict security measures to ensure the safety of diplomatic missions and international organizations operating within the country.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Araji made this statement during a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador to Baghdad, Christopher Beam, where they discussed enhancing bilateral relations between Iraq and Canada.

Al-Araji highlighted Iraq’s commitment to expanding ties with Canada across political, economic, and commercial sectors, emphasizing the country’s focus on sustainable development and forming effective partnerships with friendly nations. He also addressed regional tensions resulting from ongoing military operations, noting the threat these pose to national and regional security, as well as global energy resources. Al-Araji expressed hope for intervention from peace-promoting countries to help resolve the conflict, advocating for a return to diplomacy and adherence to international law and UN resolutions.

The discussion also touched on the persistent threat of terrorism, with Al-Araji acknowledging the ongoing danger posed by ISIS as an ideological force. He detailed Iraq’s efforts in moving families from Al-Hol camp to Al-Amal camp for rehabilitation, reintegrating many back into society. Al-Araji stressed the necessity of international collaboration in intelligence sharing and cutting off resources that fuel terrorism.

Ambassador Beam reiterated Canada’s eagerness to strengthen its relationship with Iraq, particularly in trade and investment, to support sustainable development. He also expressed Canada’s willingness to receive its citizens among the prisoners recently transferred and commended Iraq’s significant role in collaborating with international partners to de-escalate regional military conflicts.
