Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the significance of the martyrs of the Iraqi press, describing them as a pivotal part of the nation's history and underscoring the state's obligation to support their families. He made these remarks during a meeting with families of the press martyrs on World Press Freedom Day.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister expressed his deep appreciation and pride for the journalists who lost their lives, particularly during the conflict with the terrorist organization ISIS. He noted that journalists were crucial in conveying the truth about the battles and that meeting with their families provides an opportunity to address their needs and concerns.

Al-Sudani highlighted the vital role of field journalists in truth-telling and their support for the state, law, and constitution. He affirmed the importance of journalism in establishing a democratic society, following Iraq's shift from a dictatorial regime to one that respects freedom of expression. He acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by journalists during this transition.

The Prime Minister also stressed the government's responsibility to create a conducive environment for journalism. He called for a humanitarian journalistic approach that addresses societal needs, aids development, and ensures citizens' voices reach government officials. Al-Sudani pointed to Iraq's current period of recovery, stability, and reconstruction, noting the country's notable freedom of the press and expression.
