Baghdad:Ninety-two Iraqi universities and colleges have been included in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Global Ranking, as announced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This marks an increase from the 87 institutions that participated in the previous year’s rankings.

According to Iraqi News Agency, this year’s edition included about 2,016 university institutions from 110 countries. The University of Babylon achieved the highest position among Iraqi institutions, ranking 101st globally. Other prominent universities such as Anbar, Al-Mustaqbal, Karbala, Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical, Baghdad, Al-Kafeel, and Warith Al-Anbiya also featured prominently, highlighting the growing emphasis on sustainability in Iraq’s higher education sector.

The UI GreenMetric ranking assesses universities based on six criteria: campus setting and infrastructure (15%), energy and climate change (21%), waste management (18%), water usage (10%), transportation and campus mobility (18%), and academic education and research programs (18%). These criteria reflect the focus on sustainability performance across campuses worldwide.
