Iraq’s Environment Ministry Targets Zero Pollution Levels in Basra

Basra:Iraq’s Environment Minister, Sarwa Abdul Wahed, announced that the ministry is striving to achieve zero pollution levels, with plans to establish air and water monitoring stations in Basra to enhance the province’s environmental conditions.

According to Iraqi News Agency, the announcement was made during a press conference held in Basra, where Minister Abdul Wahed acknowledged the significant developments observed in the province, including cleaner streets and improved architecture. She emphasized the importance of these developments in transforming Basra into a leading province in environmental performance, highlighting its economic significance to Iraq.

The minister noted that while progress has been made in reducing pollution, efforts are still in the early stages. She mentioned the presence of biological treatment units in hospitals across Basra as a critical step forward. Additionally, she underscored the need for completing solid waste treatment and wastewater management projects, pointing out that some treatment stations are still under construction and face challenges, particularly with the Zaytoon River.

During her visit, discussions with Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani led to agreements to advance pending procedures for operationalizing certain stations. The Basra Provincial Government has approved air quality monitoring stations, and the Environmental Protection and Improvement Council has approved water monitoring stations, which will help track environmental indicators and support the ministry’s goals.
