Nir Yitzhak: An Israeli aircraft accidentally dropped a bomb near an Israeli settlement on the Gaza Strip border due to a “technical malfunction.” The incident took place on Tuesday evening, near Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, approximately 3 kilometers from the border.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Israeli army released a statement saying, “A munition fell from an Israeli army fighter plane on its way to a mission in the Gaza Strip. The munition fell in an open area near Nir Yitzhak due to a technical malfunction.” The army did not disclose the type of bomb involved, but confirmed there were no injuries as a result. The incident is currently under investigation.

A spokesperson for Nir Yitzhak indicated that the bomb landed in an agricultural area. He mentioned ongoing communication with military officials and anticipated a comprehensive investigation into the matter. Nir Yitzhak, which has a population of about 550 people according to the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, was previously affected by a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported in February that only about half of the kibbutz’s residents have returned to live there. This recent incident, while rare, is not without precedent. In May of the previous year, a similar occurrence happened when an Israeli fighter jet mistakenly dropped a bomb on the nearby town of Yated. That bomb did not explode and was subsequently recovered by Israeli forces.
